Burgess Signature Boadicea Mattress
The Burgess Signature Boadicea is a traditionally made mattress from the Burgess Signature collection, combining 2,000 individually pocketed springs with a generous selection of natural upholstery materials.
The pocket spring unit is available in soft, medium or firm tension, while the upper layers include cashmere, wool, silk and English-spun horsehair, along with cotton and other fibres. The result is a substantial mattress with a natural-fibre comfort layer and a choice of firmness to suit different preferences.
At Burgess, traditional mattress making is still very much part of the process. The Boadicea features three rows of genuine hand side stitching, hand tufting with rosebud tufts and reinforced flag-stitched handles, giving it the sort of traditional construction you'd expect from a specialist British mattress maker.
The mattress is finished with Burgess Heritage Ivory ticking, a super-soft stretch fabric with chemical-free flame retardancy, along with distinctive contrast tape edging.
A closer look at the construction
One of the interesting things about the Boadicea is the range of natural materials used within its upholstery. Cashmere, silk, English lambs wool and horsehair all have a long history in traditional mattress making, each contributing something different to the overall feel and construction.
The English-spun horsehair is particularly notable. It's a traditional upholstery material valued for its resilient, springy character and is used here alongside the softer natural fibres.
Made by Burgess
Burgess has been making mattresses in the UK since 1927, with traditional hand craftsmanship remaining an important part of its manufacturing process.
The Boadicea is a good example of the type of mattress Burgess is known for, combining a modern pocket spring unit with traditional hand finishing and a substantial selection of natural upholstery materials.
Key Features
2,000 UK-produced pocket springs
The Boadicea contains 2,000 individually pocketed springs, with a choice of soft, medium or firm tension. The pocket springs respond independently across the sleeping surface.
Cashmere, wool, silk and horsehair
The mattress contains generous layers of natural fillings including cashmere, wool, silk and English-spun horsehair, providing a substantial natural-fibre comfort layer.
English-spun horsehair
Horsehair is traditionally used in high-quality mattress making for its resilience and springy character. Here it forms part of the natural upholstery layers alongside cashmere, wool and silk.
English lambs wool
The upper upholstery layers are finished with super-soft pure new English lambs wool, adding natural softness and cushioning.
Cotton and recycled fibres
Deep layers of bonded cotton and hypoallergenic recycled and recyclable white fibres provide further cushioning within the mattress.
Natural hessian spring insulator
A natural hessian layer is used as the spring insulator above the pocket spring unit, forming part of the traditional mattress construction.
Burgess Heritage Ivory ticking
Finished with Burgess Heritage Ivory ticking, featuring a super-soft stretch feel and chemical-free flame retardancy.
Choice of tension
The Boadicea is available in soft, medium and firm tension, giving you a choice of feel depending on your preference.
Three rows of hand side stitching
The mattress border features three rows of genuine hand side stitching, strengthening the edges and adding to the traditional hand-finished construction.
Hand tufted with rosebud tufts
Traditional hand tufting with rosebud tufts helps secure the upholstery layers and maintain the shape of the mattress.
Reinforced flag-stitched handles
Strong flag-stitched handles are fitted to the sides of the mattress to assist with turning and handling.
Distinctive contrast tape edging
A contrasting tape edge provides a neat finish around the mattress border and gives the Boadicea its distinctive appearance.
Try it in store
The Boadicea is on display in our Morecambe showroom, where you can try the different mattress tensions and compare it with other Burgess mattresses and natural-fibre mattresses from other manufacturers.
Trying mattresses in person is the best way to work out which combination of spring system, fillings and firmness feels right for you — there's no pressure to decide while you're in store.
